Madame and I experienced a 'coup de foudre' the first time we visited the Pays Basque (aka the French Basque Country) together - so much so that we started planning our next holiday there as we were driving away. After a few more visits, we concluded that this was where we were going to live one day, once the necessity of having to earn a living was a thing of the past. In mid-2007, we sold up in the UK and we finally realised our long-held dream to move to the Pays Basque. It's everything we ever hoped it would be and it's probably the best decision we've ever made - we've absolutely no regrets. As I can't see myself ever returning to England, I thought I should become part of society here (eg, the right to vote in local and national elections) and so I applied for French citizenship about 5-6 years ago. I was delighted to receive it as it meant my long term stay here was secure.
